Frequently asked questions.
What is a therapy session like?
In many ways, it is a conversation about you and the reasons you are seeking a therapy. As sessions are held over a videoconferencing platform, you will have a face-to-face conversation with your clinician. You will be asked questions. You will be asked to ponder and wonder about your experiences. You will probably cry. You will most likely laugh. You will most likely be given ungraded homework, and, ultimately, you will get a chance to have a different understanding and relationship with yourself.
What if I’m too embarrassed to share intimate details?
You and everyone else start off embarrassed or ashamed to mention personal items. In time, as you start trusting your therapist, the personal items will not be difficult to share. While I cannot give you details, it is safe to say I have heard some pretty “interesting” personal details. Not much shocks us anymore, but please don’t make that a goal. Personal details that are not shared may be feeding into feelings of shame. While common, shame is a very destructive force, which disempowers you. Don’t worry too much about sharing personal details in the beginning. Eventually, when you feel safe and comfortable with your therapist, you may start to share these more embarrassing items.
Is therapy worth the price?
As with all things that have a cost associated with them, you will need to weight the benefits of therapy to the cost of not seeking counseling. A typical 60-min session is approximately $225. If you have insurance, your co-pay may only be $20+ per session. If you are paying out of pocket, sliding scale fees may be available to you. It never hurts to ask.
